Health Checks - Patients may request to have a medical check up every 3-5 years if they have not been seen during that time. Appointments can be made with a Practice Nurse. If the patient is 75 or over, this can be yearly and the consultation can take place in the home of the patient where, in the reasonable opinion of the GP this would be appropriate.

- Cervical smear -our Practice Nurses are trained to undertake these
- Breast screening – the screening unit attends every three years and eligible patients will be sent an invitation from the Breast Screening Service at York
- Well Baby Clinics - held in Helmsley and run by the Health Visitors (at the Methodist Church Hall) on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month 14:00 - 15:30. Health Visitors 01439 770503.
- Childhood immunisation clinics - by appointment with Practice Nurses
Minor Surgical Procedures - Undertaken by the doctors (by appointment) – for example, removal of skin lesions.
Minor Injuries - Many minor injuries may be dealt with at the surgery but some will be referred on to the Minor Injuries’ Unit at Malton Hospital or an Accident & Emergency Department. There is not always a doctor on site at Helmsley Medical Centre, we may be out on visits or at necessary meetings - please telephone to check rather than assuming immediate care is available. Our staff will be able to advise you as to the best place to go for appropriate treatment.
Non-Nhs Services
Some services provided are not covered under our General Medical Services contract with the NHS and therefore attract charges. Examples include the following:
- Medicals for pre-employment, sports and driving requirements (HGV, PSV etc.)
- Insurance claim forms
- Passport form signing
- Prescriptions for taking medication abroad
- Private sick notes
- Vaccination certificates
The fees charged are based on the British Medical Association (BMA) suggested scales and our Receptionists and Secretaries will be happy to advise you about them along with appointment availability.
Sexual Health
We offer free Chlamydia tests through the practice. Please come into the surgery and collect a kit from the box in the front porch or one of the patient toilets. Instructions are included in the pack.

Travel Vaccinations
If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.

It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required for the Practice Nurse to give you the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.
Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.
